AKN Eco Club is a students club established by Children for Green New Nepal (CGNN) in January 2009 as a part of its project at Adarsha Kanya Niketan High School, Mangalbazar. AKN Eco Club is mini project of CGNN.
The main purpose of AKN Eco Club is to develop Adarsha Kanya Niketan High School as the most environmentally friendly school in the city, to educate students about environmental issues, to raise awareness amongst students and community, to empower Eco Club members and lend their hands in various social activities, and to develop the personal qualities of Eco Club members.
AKN Eco Club has currently 22 members from classes 8 and 9 with a steering committee of 5 members. Eco Club will organize various environmental awareness activities within the school and community
Activities of AKN Eco Club
School awareness program
CGNN created a series of short, simple presentations on a variety of current environmental issues facing Nepal and the world, currently focusing on air/water pollution, global warming, and deforestation. CGNN volunteers will train AKN Eco Club members to present the materials to school-aged children and send teams to schools to give these presentations
Compost Project
AKN Eco Club will build a compost bin on the premises of the school and encourage club members and students to bring their household waste to the school to compost it. A one day seminar will be organized to disseminate knowledge and information about waste management.
Street Drama
CGNN will train Eco Club members to act in a street play which CGNN has already prepared. The 45 minute environmentally related drama is called “Environment, My Responsibility”. It addresses issues related to air pollution, deforestation and global warming. AKN club members will perform this drama monthly at different public squares and streets in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktpur to raise awareness amongst a larger group in the community, especially illiterate groups.
Trash Cleaning Events
CGNN volunteers and AKN club members will organize public trash cleaning events every week at different main streets of Lalitpur. These events create awareness amongst local communities on the importance of keeping their area clean. Preparation is minimal and the cleanings simply require the participation of the public.
Eco Tour
All AKN club members and CGNN volunteers will visit different polluted rivers, forests, historical places, water resources, and water treatment plants in Kathmandu to gain practical knowledge about water resources and water pollution in the city.
Trainings
CGNN will help organize monthly trainings and workshops on leadership, report writing, public speaking, and waste management to strengthen our capacity to disseminate information amongst AKN club members and students. The trainings also build a stronger sense of confidence in ourselves and the work being done.
Tree Planting
AKN Eco Club will organize a tree planting campaign at different school premises and local areas.
Art Camp
AKN Eco club will organize art camps every other month in schools to involve students in environmental art education. These camps will act as follow-up to school presentations and will include activities such as art competitions and exhibits.
Mural Painting
AKN Eco Club will mobilize club members in different places around the valley to paint on walls about environmental issues in a creative manner. Murals will be created monthly in different local communities, giving them greater pride in their public space, and will include environmental messages and pictures which will spread awareness to passers-by. Wall painting is also a great medium to spread CGNN’s message to the illiterate constituents of the population
Public Events
AKN Eco Club will participate in and help organize a variety of public events with the goal of raising awareness about environmental issues. These events include Environment Day, Earth Day, Children’s March, Climate Parade, and Water Day activities.
Patan Durbar Square Focused Activities:
Ranipokhari Maintenance
